Just catching up on this, thank you for sharing your lovely memories from the Lake District - they feel very poignant as someone who lives here now :)

My father read us all the Arthur Ransome books when we were children. We loved them and longed to have a river, lake or pond with a boat to mess around in…obviously we assumed we would not be duffers and therefore would not drown!

Fabulous! Yes, I don’t think any of us entertained the idea that we could be duffers 😂

I loved these reflections, David. I have a similar relationship with The Railway Children – nothing excited me more than the idea of moving to a remote cottage somewhere in Northern England! I think this is why returning to old literary favourites is so lovely as it reminds us of a simpler time, and also brings back so many feelings from when we read them as children. Thank you for this trip down memory lane! 🌼

I so agree! I must re-read The Railway Children…a good excuse to buy it in a nice edition 📚😂

I read The Railway Children for the first time a few years ago and I really enjoyed it! 😊

I loved the sentence about simple food. There is nothing better than a walk out in autumn or winter (I’m not a huge summer fan…not sure if you’re allowed to say that) when you’re cold, tired, but exhilarated and come home for a good pot of tea.

So true! I’m not a summer fan either…well I like the sun, but not the heat so much 🙈😂☀️

I saw the 70’s film (sometime in the 80’s) and remember thinking I was having a fever dream. As if: who would let these children fend for themselves on such a lake, on an island? What an adventure that would be! Thanks for bringing back such a beautiful memory!
