At the start of a new calendar year, whether we're looking ahead, or hunkering down ready to emerge in spring, January has brought its own challenges, but also moments of intense natural beauty.
A lovely reflection of January. I used to be the “new year, new me” type but I’m leaning to ease in gently now and it really does make a difference doesn’t it.
Like you we’ve been blessed with some beautiful cold mornings too. One morning we had -5 and fog, it was a stunning start to the day ❄️😊
Just discovered you and am grateful to read your words this morning. It helped me to reflect on this past month and on life in general. All the best, Matthew
Wonderful photos David and such lovely reflections. In this last week of January I am going to be a lot kinder to myself, and allow that which needs to arrive to arrive ✨ thank you as ever for your beautiful writing and photos.
The gentleness of your reflections is a salve … and your photography is excellent. Our skies - in a very rural part of France - are dark, properly dark … JoJo has been looking up a lot and she has an app (of course there’s an app) that tells her what’s what.
We’re able to avoid the commercialism of festive seasons or artificially designated ‘seasons’ so the switch from Xmas to January isn’t too stark … and we have big travel plans for the year ahead and a need to hunker down and save, so ‘wintering’ feels fine.
We had lots of snow which was still lying in piles after 2 weeks. I remember as a child putting my foot into piles like that and the snow going iny wellies.
When I was a child, January was a sad month because it started on the 7th with putting away all the Christmas decorations and Carnival with its Fat Tuesday and children parade around the village (with amazing costumes, entertainment and yummy pastries) was still a month away. Back then, capitalism hadn't brought all the Valentine's stuff yet because it wasn't a thing here in Italy, I first heard of it from my English teacher in elementary school. However, the sadness lasted very little because we used to have glorious snow days!
Now that snow does no longer come sadly and Carnival is no longer something we fully celebrate, especially as adults, so there is no more expectation for the month ahead, January is a rather dull month but I started the habit to take walks in the park during my lunch break and frosty weekend mornings and I really appreciate the sharp cold air in contrast of the indoor warmth.

Thank you so much 🙏🌿

You had a lot more snow than us, but we definitely had a lengthy frost ✨
Awwwww I love this so much 🥰❤️
❤️❤️❤️🥰
I’ve been enjoying the stars on those crisp cold nights David, so beautiful to stare at them.
I find I have to put the effort in to simple rituals to through winter without wishing it away. That way, I find I’m less anxious to move it along.
Beautiful frosty images.
Have a great weekend.
We have been blessed with some gorgeous crisp nights recently, and it’s so humbling to look up to the stars and planets above ✨

Yes, I think January is a rather strange in-between month; something and nothing 🌿
